Amina Sarkar Bharatram
A slipped disc in 2004 introduced Amina to the practise of Iyengar Yoga. She resonated with it because of its scientific approach, the attention given to alignment and the various methods of improvisations. Inspired to become a teacher, she worked hard and in 2011 she received her certificate from BKS Iyengar himself.
With Geetaji’s blessings she opened Iyengar Yogamandala in 2016. Amina's passion and dedication to yoga comes through in the classes she teaches. Each class is unique and a fresh experience for her students and she aims to boost their confidence and take them out of their comfort zone and introduce them to advanced asanas.
Her classes are not just about the physical movements but also enriched with tidbits of information on anatomy, benefits of various poses and guidance to students encourage them to explore each pose for themselves based on their body.
As she says, “Yoga is not my life…my life is yoga”.
A regular student at RIMYI she has been taught by Geetaji, Prashantji and Abhijata. She has also studied under Jawahar Bangera, Birjoo Mehta, Raya Datta and Firoza Razvi.
In 2010 she was part of the demonstrating team at the conference ‘Yogic And Buddhist Techniques Of Mind Training And Cultivating Happiness” – a historic conversation between BKS Iyengar and The Dalai Lama. As part of Guruji’s centenary celebrations, she is involved in workshops to spread Iyengar Yoga to cities in India.
“If you get, give.
If you learn, teach."
- Maya Angelou
In her endeavour to give back to society she also teaches yoga to children with intellectual disabilities.
Aside from Iyengar Yoga Amina is passionate about trekking and travel, where she enjoys interacting with people from various walks of life.
